Summary: This dissertation aimed to evaluate indoor air quality at municipal schools in the city of Vitória
in the state of Espírito Santo. The concentrations of particulate matter (TSP, PM10, PM2.5 and
PM1), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and fungi in the different indoor environments (classrooms,
computer lab, library and cafeteria) at two schools: “Izaura Marques da Silva” (EMIM) located
in the Andorinhas and “Eunice Pereira da Silveira” (EMEP) neighborhood in Maruípe during
four weeks in the spring of 2019. In addition, MP10, MP2.5 and NO2 were also monitored outdoor
by an automatic monitoring station belonging to NQUALIAR-UFES. In the indoor
environments, particulate matter was monitored by means of an Osiris particle detector and NFRM impactors using PTFE filters, to establish its chemical composition an X-ray Fluorescence
Spectrometer by Dispersive Energy (ED -XRF) was used. Passive Ogawa samplers were used
to sample indoor NO2 that were analyzed by a spectrometer. Fungi were collected using an
Andersen CF-6 impactor using petri dishes with Sweet Potato Dextrose Agar (BDA) plus
Chloramphenicol (antibiotic), the identification of the genera was carried out phenotypically.
The results indicated higher concentrations of particulate matter in the cafeterias and lower
levels in the libraries, in general, the 24-hour averages complied with the limits established by
the legislation (WHO, CONAMA). Elements contained in salt water such as Cl and Na, were
found in the samples in addition to elements attributed to the steel industry such as Si, Al, K.
NO2 reached the highest concentration in the cafeteria, related to the usage of stoves in the
kitchen. Fungal concentrations were higher in EMIM, in EMEP lower values were recorded.
The highest concentrations were observed between 8:00 AM and 12:00 AM, the outdoor
samples revealed lower concentrations than those from the indoor environments. The most
prevalent identified genera were Penicillium, Clasdosporium and Aspergillus.
