Summary: In Brazil, about 40% of the urban population still does not have adequate service in the
sewage sector, which contributes to the increase of pollution by organic matter in the
water bodies of domestic effluents. The wastewater treatment, before launching,
constitutes the main measure to control water pollution and the process of choosing
the appropriate treatment system involves the analysis of technical, economic,
environmental and social criteria. This study proposed the selection of wastewater
treatment systems for the Benevente river watershed (Espírito Santo, Brazil) based on
the combined use of water quality modeling, optimization technique and multicriteria
analysis. The QUAL-UFMG model, developed in the MATLAB software environment,
was used in the simulation of the BOD and DO parameters in the water system of the
study area. The minimum sewage treatment efficiencies were determined using the
water quality model associated with the Genetic Algorithm metaheuristic optimization
technique, considering the compliance with the environmental standards established
in CONAMA Resolutions 357:2005 and 430:2011, as well as the equity of efforts
between polluters. From the thirty-four technologies evaluated, the pre-selection stage
disregarded treatment systems that did not meet the restrictions imposed on the
districts of Urânia, Matilde, Ibitiruí, Crubixá, Sagrada Família, Aparecida, Alfredo
Chaves, Jabaquara and Alto Pongal. The selection of wastewater treatment systems
was carried out through the hierarchy of the Sociotechnical Index, established after the
application of the MAUT method. The results indicated, for the districts with smaller
populations, variations of the stabilization pond systems (Anaerobic Pond associated
with the Facultative Pond and Stabilization Pond, Anaerobic Pond associated with the
Facultative Pond and Algae Removal) and Septic Tank associated with Biodisc; for the
most populous districts, the Conventional Activated Sludge associated with Tertiary
Filtration, and Anaerobic Pond associated with the Facultative Pond and Algae
Removal systems have been suggested.
